GREEN TRANSITION
Arpinge is highly oriented towards facilitating the transition to a low greenhouse gas emission, climate resilient and nature positive economy, in line with the Paris Agreement targets aimed at achieving zero net emissions by 2050 as well as the Kunming-Montreal Global Agreement on Biodiversity. The Company has defined a clear Climate & Nature Strategy to achieve such goals. For further information, please refer to the 2023 Integrated Report.
The Group operates in key areas of the green transition.
Indeed, through our investments and assets, we are contributing to the generation of energy from renewable sources, to improving the energy efficiency of organizations, as well as to sustainable mobility and transport.
These are rapidly expanding sectors, where significant investment is expected in the coming years; competitiveness, energy security and, ultimately, the resilience of the entire economy to future shocks depend on their achievement.
Arpinge is fully in line with the climate transition, with 100% of business assets aligned to the EU taxonomy on environmentally sustainable activities. Furthermore, Arpinge has recorded extremely low carbon intensity levels of only 15t CO2 per million € of revenues, which are far lower than market averages (108t CO2 per million dollars revenues for companies included in the S&P500).
The Group’s energy segment is entirely made up of renewable energy plants, which generate clean energy for a population of 286,000 people each year, avoiding about 100,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. To achieve the same positive effect, 1.7 million trees would have to be planted annually and grown for the next 10 years.
The current pipeline of battery energy storage systems (BESS) plants under development will bring the Group’s installed capacity to over 750 MW, while the biomethane-producing facilities under development will feed the Italian national grid with about 3 million cubic meters of biomethane per year. At the same time, such facilities will produce digestate, a nutrient-rich material that can be used as compost to restore soil fertility on 6,000 hectares of agricultural fields. Through these investments the Group will contribute to Italy’s climate mitigation, by avoiding further 1.1 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year.
In the field of mobility, Arpinge is the leading Italian investor and concession-holder in the Parking sector, which provides more than 9,000 parking spaces. In addition to reducing the congestion in urban centers, the Group’s assets are part of a transition into community-based technology hubs, with a smart-city and MaaS (Mobility as a Service) approach. Moreover, to help accelerate the transition to electric mobility, we have set up a plan to equip all our assets with electric charging stations, powered – where feasible – by on-site photovoltaic systems.
In the field of natural capital, Arpinge has developed a pipeline of environmental improvement projects composed by initiatives highly diversified in terms of project type, location, readiness level and expected benefits. In such respect, the company is launching its first set of Italian projects aimed at improving biodiversity on sensitive areas within the Natura 2000 Network, while contributing to increase carbon removals.
In addition to portfolio segments, Arpinge constantly assesses investment opportunities in other sectors, with the aim of developing sustainable and resilient business models geared to addressing environmental and social challenges in a long-term perspective.
